Sumy - Ukrainian Sloboda town
Sumy was founded in 1652 at the banks of Sumka and Psel Rivers as a Cossack town-fortress and was intended to protect Sloboda region from the Crimean Tatar invasions . On 1652 about 100 families were allowed by the Russian government to displace from the town Stavishche in Kiev region, headed by chieftain Kondratyev and moved to Sumy.
After the Tatar threat has discontinued the territory was incorporated into the Russian Empire, Sumy evolved into an important economical and cultural centre of Sloboda region and is the administrative centre of the Sumy region with a population of 300 000 today.
